The design of a home has a few moments to express the architectural style and sophistication. Knowing how these moments are detailed and constructed is crucial to getting a house right. Please join ICAA Southeast as we welcome Steve Mouzon for the third lecture in the 2021 Quattour Lecture Series.
This lecture proposes a new process for detailing traditional architecture that achieves several ideals not usually found in a single system. It lays out underlying principles of six families of architectural elements used in a broad range of traditional styles, contrasting them with how they are commonly built-in error.
This concept is built on a matrix from vernacular to classical and from reserved to romantic, with strong cost implications across the matrix. And while a broad range of traditional styles has their natural homes on the matrix, it also allows for the propagation of new living traditions in architecture that can evolve over time, as traditional architecture has done throughout history.
Steve Mouzon is an architect, urbanist, author, blogger, and photographer based in Tuscaloosa. He co-founded the Urban Guild, which was instrumental in the creation of the Katrina Cottages initiative. The Guild is the nexus of Project: SmartDwelling, which works to redefine the house to be much smaller and more sustainable. Steve speaks regularly across the US and abroad on sustainability issues.
